Opening of a new elementary school in Eziudo, Nigeria

After having been active in the region near Port Harcourt with the hospital project Obizi for a long time, Lufthansa HelpAlliance started a new project in 2004 which has now resulted in the opening of a new school building for 140 children.

When the new Lufthansa route to Port Harcourt, Nigeria, was opened, apart from attending the celebrations a Lufthansa delegation including the responsible HelpAlliance member and flight captain Arnd Klinge also visited the hospital project. While they were in Obizi, the LH delegation also visited the nearby school in Eziudo. The school was in a rather bad state – similar to many other schools in the region.

What started as an idea was finally realized last year: the necessary funds were available and the construction of a new school building could be started.. Since the old building had partly collapsed by then and could not be saved, it was torn down. The new building was finished in September 2006. It contains five classrooms and one teachers’ room. To date, about 140 children attend the school.

The community Eziudo is part of the region Mbaise which is governed by King Eze Dr. Des Ogugua. Like all other citizens of the region, the king was very excited about the new school, a project the community would not have been able to undertake on its own.

Despite limited resources and the poverty of the citizens, King EZE Dr. Des Ogugua insisted on opening festivities and inviting the responsible coordinators from Help Alliance. The opening ceremony took place on 03. Feb. 2007 with Arnd Klinge, 500 guests and reporters of the local TV channel attending.
