Hope e.V. - aid for Ethiopia and Malawi
Hope e.V. was founded in 1992 by a group of flight attendants who were so touched by the poverty and hardship suffered by the people of Ethiopia that they decided to actively support humanitarian projects in the country.
Hope e.V. was founded in 1992 by a group of flight attendants who were so touched by the poverty and hardship suffered by the people of Ethiopia that they decided to actively support humanitarian projects in the country. Since then Hope e.V. has transported innumerable suitcases filled with donated goods to Addis Abeba.
A few years ago the charity also expanded its activities to Malawi where regular goods shipments help improve the work and education of doctors at Lilongwe Central Hospital.
Black Lion Hospital
Hope's engagement in Ethiopia started in 1992 at the same time when the German doctor Dr. Burmeister-Rother led the installation of an intensive care unit at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Abeba. Over the years that followed, Hope has provided substantial help with the equipment of the ICU, and even today the charity regularly supplies the ICU with medicines and other medical supplies.
One of Hope's major medical projects supported a pediatric cardiosurgery project of the hospital of Braunschweig (Germany) at the hospital of Addis Abeba. The charity financed the transportation of the complete material needed for the operations and thus contributed to the success of the project. 19 children were implanted new heart valves. Under normal circumstances such an operation would not have been possible for them in Ethiopia.
With the help of the hospital of Siegen, Germany, Hope e.V. currently supports the installation of a dialysis unit at Black Lion Hospital. So far, dialysis was only available at very few private hospitals in Ethiopia and most of the patients for whom this treatment is of vital importance could not afford it. In the beginning of 2006 Hope e.V. was proud to hand over the first of four dialysis machines to Black Lion Hospital.
Kidane Meheret Orphanage
The Kidane Meheret Orphanage is run by nuns of the order of St. Francis from Malta. The ever rising number of AIDS orphans of Addis Abeba are given a new home at Kidane Meheret, as well as a future through education. Hope e.V. has been supporting this institution since 1999 with urgently needed supplies ranging from children's clothes to baby food. Currently the orphanage is home to 120 children and youths of all ages who are lovingly cared for by the sisters around the clock.
The new building of the orphanage, which was completed in 2002, was partly funded by Hope e.V. Donations to the charity helped pay for the roof, new beds for the children, as well as new blankets, pillows and bed-linen for the whole institution.
Many colleagues of Lufthansa cabin crews regularly visit the orphanage during their layovers in Addis Abeba.
The Order of Mother Teresa
Innumerable homeless and street children in Addis Abeba have to fight for their daily survival without any outside help. These people are cared for by the order of the „Missionaries of Charity“.
The house of these sisters of the order of Mother Teresa attend to more than 800 often critically ill patients for whom the house of the order is the only possible place to turn to for treatment. The selfless help of the sisters is supported by Hope e.V. with donations of clothes and goods, as well as cargo deliveries. With the active help of Lufthansa crews hundreds of „helping suitcases“ could be handed over to the order.
AGOS
The charitable project „Abebech Gobena Orphanage and School“ was founded by Mrs. Abebech during the time of the great Ethiopian famine. What started as private help for a few orphans has turned into one of the most successful charity projects in the country over the last 20 years.
Hope e.V. is proud that it could support this project very actively over many years. We were able to give substantial help to this project by providing children's clothes, toys and stationery, as well as financial help by organising sponsorships for more than 50 children. Today AGOS stands on its own feet and provides invaluable support for many people in need.
Malawi – Lilongwe Central Hospital
Malawi is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The medical care in the country is very basic, and today an estimated 14.2% of the population are HIV positive – one of the highest international ratios.
Dr. Burmeister who we know from her time at Black Lion Hospital in Addis Abeba has been working at Lilongwe Central Hospital for some years now under very difficult conditions. The most basic goods are lacking, especially medicines and medical supplies like wound dressings. Hope e.V. has the goal to improve the working conditions of doctors at this hospital and thus the health care for the community by delivering as much as possible of the goods needed.
