Denden Youth Center

Asmara – Eritrea

HelpAlliance has equipped a library to help children and youngsters in the Denden Camp to find an alternative to life on the street

More than 4,000 children and youngsters live in the Denden camp, former barracks which serve as accommodation for disabled persons and their families as well as for families of soldiers killed in action.

After rebuilding the former prison into a library with a computer center the budget of the regional administration of Asmara was exhausted and financial support was urgently needed to equip the library.

A Lufthansa employee working in Asmara is involved in the project and he has asked HelpAlliance for support.

By procuring several electronic facilities as well as a TV set, a video player, a DVD player and a plasma screen, various educational concepts can now be offered to the youngsters.

The library with its computer center primarily offers guided self-help. The learning contents are varied and – among others – include subjects like economics, natural sciences, liberal arts and environment.

The youth center guarantees equality of opportunities and thus a better chance for deprived children and youngsters to develop their potential.
