Sunshine Project – a safe shelter for street children in New Delhi

Delhi – India

Mr and Mrs Arora – a New Delhi dressmakers couple – actively support children from the slums of the Indian megacity of New Delhi since 2002

Sunshine Project - Delhi

What once started with the support of a little girl begging at the roadside evolved into an association registered in India which is now taking care of 97 children during the day and which provides for anything children may need for a healthy development.

At the shelter the children eat and do their homework. Access to school is thus guaranteed as well as support by additional lessons after school. Here they can play and experience protection.

Lufthansa employee Julia Hillebrecht immediately was enthused by the honorary work of the Arora couple who offer a chance with limited means to so many children, so she decided to help.

The flight attendant applied for assistance and HelpAlliance decided to support the construction of a kitchen and washing rooms. Five computers and printers can also be purchased, so the older children can prepare for their first job. For the younger ones shoes, schoolbags and books can be purchased for one year. At the same time a basic physical examination is guaranteed for each child. The children who so far have had no access to a regular water-supply first of all have to learn everything about hygiene. Mr. Arora enjoys telling the story of a little girl who had been told that the toothbrush she had been given belonged to her only and – for hygienic reasons – must not be shared with anyone. During the first night the little one slept with the toothbrush in her arms because it was the first thing which belonged only to her.
